Your Body Already Knows the Answer

Most of us have been taught to think our way through life.

When a decision needs to be made, we analyze. We weigh options, consult other people, research outcomes, and run the numbers.

When something feels uncertain, we reach for more information. When something goes wrong, we turn it over in our minds again and again, searching for the answer we must have missed.

For a long time, this was my default too. I trusted my mind above everything else.

And while thinking things through has its place, I kept arriving at the same limitation: the mind can only work with what it already knows.

It draws from past experience, old patterns, and familiar frameworks. It is brilliant at processing. But it doesn’t always lead us somewhere new.

What I’ve come to understand is that there is another source of intelligence available to us, one most of us have learned to overlook: the body.

Think about the last time you met someone and something felt off, even though you couldn’t explain it.

The moment a decision arrived as a physical sensation: a lightness in the chest, a sense of opening, before your mind had formed a single clear thought about it.

Or the tightening in your stomach that appeared before you’d consciously registered that something wasn’t working.

Those weren’t coincidences. They were communication.

“Rather than focusing externally, always scanning the horizon for what may do us harm, we focus inward on the energy within and around our body and rely on it to show us what is true for us.”

— Dr. Sue Morter

The body responds to what is actually happening right now, not to what we expect or fear or hope. Unlike the mind, which filters everything through our history, the body is present in real time. It registers truth before we’ve had a chance to rationalize, minimize, or explain it away.

We’re often told to trust our gut, as though body wisdom is simply a vague hunch we either have or we don’t.

But the intelligence of the body is more specific than that.

It communicates through sensation: an opening or a tightening, ease or effort, warmth or a bracing that arrives before thought does. Learning to read those signals isn’t a gift reserved for the especially intuitive. It’s a practice, and it begins with attention.

Before reacting to a situation, pause. Before reaching for an explanation, turn your attention inward. Notice what’s present in the body before the mind fills in the story. The question shifts from what do I think about this to what does this feel like right now?

That simple shift opens something significant. Over time, the signal becomes clearer:

Decisions that once required days of deliberation begin to arrive with more ease.

Situations that deplete you become easier to recognize before they’ve cost you.

Opportunities that align with where you’re headed feel distinctly different in the body from the ones that don’t, even when both look equally reasonable on paper.

The body has never stopped communicating. It has been signaling all along, through sensation, through tension, through the unmistakable feeling of a yes or a no that arrives before the mind has assembled its argument.

The invitation is simply this: listen. The body has been fluent in your truth far longer than you realize.
