The Version of You That Already Has What You Want

Most of us carry a clear image of who we are trying to become. More confident, more at peace, more fully expressed.

We can feel the pull of that version of ourselves, and almost without realizing it, we place it firmly in the future.

I did this for years. The person I most wanted to be always seemed to exist just ahead of me, somewhere on the other side of the next breakthrough, the next level of healing, the next significant shift.

What I came to understand, slowly and through a lot of lived experience, is that the premise was off.

That version of you exists right now, as a real state of being you can actually inhabit.

“Change your conception of yourself and you will automatically change the world in which you live.” — Neville Goddard

We tend to assume that we’ll become a new version of ourselves after circumstances shift. After the relationship arrives, the business grows, the healing completes.

But that sequence is backwards. We inhabit the new sense of self first, and the outer world begins to reflect it back.

So what does it actually mean to inhabit that version of yourself? And what does it look like in a real day, in real moments?

Consider someone who deeply wants to feel financially secure.

The version of them that already has that security doesn’t scan a menu from the bottom up, calculating what they can afford before deciding what they want. They look at what appeals to them. They make choices from ease rather than from bracing.

Or think about someone who wants to feel confident and trusted in their work.

The version of them that already has that confidence doesn’t spend twenty minutes rewriting an email before sending it, wondering how it will land. They say what they mean, trust their perspective, and move on.

These seem like small moments. But this is precisely where identity lives: in the accumulation of choices made from a different inner place.

This is where something important tends to get missed. We focus on the distance between where we are and where we want to be, and we try to close it through effort and action.

But the distance between you and what you want lives in self-perception more than in circumstance.

It begins to close in the small moments: how you speak to yourself when something goes wrong, how you make a decision when the stakes feel high, how you carry yourself when no one is watching.

Each time you make a choice from that more expanded place, each time you meet a challenge the way that version of you would, each time you allow yourself to feel the clarity or confidence or peace they carry, you are practicing.

And what we practice with real intention, we gradually become.

That version of you is closer than it appears. The question worth sitting with is not when will I become that person

The question is: what would they feel, believe, or choose right now, in this moment, with this decision in front of them?

Start there. The rest follows from who you decide to be.
